Studio Arts Teacher

Develops and leads art workshops related to both the Frick’s permanent collections and special exhibitions with visitors of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds.

Reports to:          Coordinator of Youth & Family Programs

Hours:                    Upon completing training, guaranteed 25 hours per week in peak months, 10 hours per week during non-peak months. Day and evening work required, including occasional weekends.

Status:                  Part-time; non-exempt

Hourly Rate:       $15.00

Responsibilities:

• Create and lead interactive and hands-on art workshops for school, scout, camp groups, and families
• Work closely with museum teachers and other studio art teachers to ensure art making experiences relate to museum gallery experiences
• Attend all on-going training sessions and meetings to keep current on content information, teaching techniques, theories of education and any other topics related to the collections
• When available, attend and complete museum educator trainings of both The Frick Art Museum, Clayton and the Car & Carriage Museum
• Upon completion of training, lead groups on tours of The Frick Art Museum, Clayton and the Car & Carriage Museum
• Present accurate information about The Frick Art Museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions as related to studio process
• Individualize each program as dictated by school curriculum, teacher request, and/or student needs and abilities
• Learn format and content of new tours and workshops as they are developed
• Create quick projects for activity tables for local, off-site programs such as fairs, community events, and events at other cultural organizations
• Ensure all materials for studio workshops are prepared and organized prior to groups’ arrival
• Lead outreach programs at partner organization sites within the Pittsburgh area
• Arrive at least 30 minutes prior to each teaching session to prepare for the program and discuss that day’s format and content with the L&VE staff and other Frick Art Museum Teachers
• Greet and welcome visiting groups as they arrive according to established guidelines
• Stay at least 30 minutes after the conclusion of the program to discuss any significant events in that particular program and to clean up as needed
• Keep track of and organize studio supplies, reporting the need for more to the Youth & Family Program Coordinator
• Work assigned duties for special events, such as ticket-taking and welcome booths
• Create artmaking videos and step-by-step worksheets for virtual engagement

Qualifications:

• Committed to fostering a workplace of inclusion and belonging
• Degree in Education or Studio Arts or sufficient equivalent experience
• Demonstrated ability to teach those of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities
• Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of studio art practices in various mediums
• Commitment to diversity, equity, access, and inclusion
• Strong problem-solving abilities and the ability to adapt to changing situations in real time
• Excellent oral communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to deal effectively with staff and visitors of all ages
• Possess a flexible teaching style that allows for the ability to address different learning styles, cultural backgrounds, age levels and special needs
• Possess a friendly, responsible, energetic and collaborative attitude
• Ability to operate with little direct supervision to devise and conduct art experiences
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to deal effectively with both staff and visitors
• Act 33/34 clearance
• Clearance of a criminal background check and FBI fingerprinting
